About the Botetourt Food Pantry
- For the community by the community
- St. Mark's major outreach ministry is providing space and personnel to serve our community through the Botetourt Food Pantry. Reedie Waid chairs this service assisted by Pete Mahony and Suzanne MacLeod and a staff from St. Mark's and other area churches and organizations who assist at the distributions. Contributors are listed below. In addition, a number of area businesses support the Food Pantry through their support of our annual Twelfth Night Concert.
- For the past thirty years the Botetourt Food Pantry has been supported by the Fincastle area churches at St. Mark's. It has grown continuously, and is currently serving approximately 200 families in need. The pantry includes USDA goods which require referrals from Botetourt Social Services for those who are eligible for food stamps. In addition, neighbors in crisis or with an immediate need can request assistance with food on a temporary basis. Those desiring food may receive it one time a month. Records are kept of each distribution. The Food Pantry is open from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon on Saturdays, and by appointment in case of emergencies.
- Provisions
- The Pantry includes non-perishable canned goods, breads and baked goods, and frozen meats as available. The variety of food available is dependent on the donations of local civic groups and individuals. The food is given from the lower level of the St. Mark's Ministry Center which has its own entrance. An activity table is provided for children as families await their food distribution. In addition, an anonymous donor has provided both children's and full translations of the Holy Bible for those families who desire them. A "Prayer Request" box is always available in the Food Pantry, and a special group of intercessors pray for the needs of those who request prayers.
- Volunteers
- Volunteers are especially welcome to assist not only in serving on Saturdays but on picking up foods from the Second Harvest Food Bank in Roanoke (strong backs, please) and on sorting and placing food in the food bank. Call St. Mark's Church (540-473-2370) for more information.
